The land

The natural burial ground at Usk is an enclosed meadow lying either side of a small stream that runs through its centre. Surrounded by mature trees on three sides, the meadow frames scenic horizons across the Usk valley towards Twmbarlwm in the west and Wentwood in the south.

The burial ground is divided into six named areas, each with its own distinctive character. Woodland shelters the western fields, leading the eyes southwards, while, to the east, views open up towards the Welsh valleys beyond.

Discover peace through the changing seasons

Within the burial ground, an oak-framed memorial shelter provides a space for services and protection from the weather if you need it. It also provides a home for inscribed oak memorial plaques that line the wall commemorating those buried in the meadow.

The rustic peace and beauty here change with each passing season. Visit the burial ground at any time of year to connect with nature, sense the elements, and feel replenished and revitalised. Find space to reflect on life, love, and loss.

Questions

Do we need to use a funeral director?

There is no legal requirement in the UK to use a funeral director. The professionals are there to support you and help you achieve what you want to do. A good funeral director will provide the help and support you need when you need it.

Can I buy a plot for ashes?

Yes, you can buy a plot to inter ashes, or you can choose to inter ashes with someone who is being buried. More information on prices and application forms is available on the forms and prices page.

What’s to stop people from building on the land?

Use of the land is restricted to natural burials by covenants contained in its 99-year lease. Beyond that, the burial ground is an integral part of the Whitworth Farm and will continue to provide land for grazing and hay-making when the lease expires.

Can we buy a double plot?

Burial and interment plots are single-depth, and double-plots are side-by-side.

What type of coffins can be used?

Coffins should be made from and lined with natural, biodegradable materials. No plastics, MDF, or chipboard should be used.

Is embalming allowed?

We can’t accept embalmed bodies for burial unless there are exceptional circumstances. Cremated remains contain no residue from embalming chemicals and can therefore be interred in the meadow.

Can I visit the burial ground over Christmas and New Year?

Yes, you can go and visit the burial ground any time during the Christmas holidays, regardless of bank holidays – This is the case all year round for visits, it is always open for you to visit a loved one.

We wanted a natural burial and this was the most beautiful location. We had a spiritual celebration, and it was the most beautiful service in stunning surroundings. I could not have asked for anything better.
